Mango shikran (shikran poli)- Maharashtrian recipe

Hello,

If you are familiar with Maharashtrian cuisine, you may have heard of Shikran Poli. For those who don’t know, Shikran is a simple dessert traditionally made with banana, milk, sugar and cardamom (elaichi), enjoyed on its own or paired with roti (poli). When served with poli, it becomes the much-loved Shikran Poli.

We usually make Shikran poli with bananas. With mango season in full swing, we thought of trying it with mangoes. And, it turned out well. 😋

As much as we enjoy traditional recipes, we also love giving them our own little twist. So, to make it more nourishing, we added a scoop of unflavored pea protein powder to the chapati dough and topped the dish with pumpkin seeds for some crunch.

The traditional version is higher in carbs and can lead to sugar crash later. If you are someone who wishes to prevent rapid sugar spikes followed by the crash, you can add a source of protein, some fiber and healthy fats like we did here by adding protein powder, chia seeds and pumpkin seeds. It adds a nice crunch which makes each bite more satisfying along with being blood sugar friendly!

Tips

  • If you prefer, you can replace pumpkin seeds with chopped almonds or pistachios.
  • We prefer mild sweetness and didn’t add sugar. If you want, you can add ½ to 1 tsp sugar to your bowl while mixing with milk.
  • We added unflavored protein powder in chapati dough to version 1 to increase the protein content in this meal. You can skip protein powder, make this with usual chapati and add protein sources (egg, curd, dal, soya etc.) in other meals.
