Sprouts chaat

Hello friends,

As kids, when we were first introduced to sprouts by our mom in form of a salad, we ate it reluctantly. Of course, we were too young to eat foods for their nutritive value, all that mattered was taste and visual appeal. Years passed by and we got accustomed to the taste. However, things took an interesting turn when we started watching cookery shows and tried out interesting recipes using sprouts like sprouts tikki, sprouts veg pulao, sprouts mushroom curry, sprouts sandwich, stuffed bun etc. and enjoyed. The fact that they are nutritious seemed like a cherry on the cake.

We used to make bhelpuri, corn chat and chana chaat at home regularly and thought why not turn sprouts into a chaat by going on similar lines. And did we tell you that this is indeed one of the most easy and tasty ways to include sprouts in one’s diet? Do give it a try and let us know your feedback. In case, you experience digestive discomfort after consuming raw sprouts, feel free to lightly steam the sprouts and then prepare it.

Sprouts chaat (Serves: 5)

Ingredients:

·        Green gram sprouts- 2 cups

·        Onion- 1 no. (chopped)

·        Tomato- 1 no. (chopped)

·        Pomegranate arils (taken from 1 medium sized fruit)

·        Coriander leaves- 2 tbsp

·        Roasted peanuts- 2 tbsp

·        Coriander- mint chutney- 1-1.5 tbsp

·        Pepper powder- ½ tsp

·        Cumin powder- 1 tsp

·        Lemon juice- 1 tsp

·        Chaat masala- ½ tsp

·        Black salt- ½ tsp

·      Salt- optional (as chaat masala and black salt are already added, taste and add only if required)

·        Sev/ mixture- 10 tbsp (2 tbsp per person)

Method:

Take a big mixing bowl, add all the ingredients and mix well until the spices coat sprouts and vegetables evenly. Portion it into 5 serving bowls/ plates and serve immediately.

If you are going to serve later, then add sev and roasted peanuts just before serving to ensure it retains the crunch.

Pro tips:

You can use brown chana sprouts/ moth sprouts/ mixed sprouts.

During summers, you may want to add chopped cucumbers.

You can add chopped raw mangoes for crunch and tangy flavour. In that case, you can skip lemon juice.
